I am Professor of Development Economics, Director of the Centre for Modern East Asian Studies, and Head of the Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research at the University of Göttingen. I am also researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and head the the Kiel Institute China Initiative. My research analyzes trade, investment and development policies with quantitative methods and a special focus on China and other emerging economies. I also investigate the political economy of natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and non-militarized conflicts.

Before having joined the University of Göttingen, I was professor at the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (2018-2019), senior researcher at Heidelberg University (2013-2018), and postdoc at Princeton University (2012-2013). I defended my Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Göttingen in August 2012 under the supervision of Axel Dreher, Stephan Klasen, and Stefanie Walter. I hold a Master’s degree from Goethe University Frankfurt as well as from Dauphine University Paris. I have also worked as a consultant for the Bertelsmann Foundation, the European Commission, and the OECD.

Short bio in German:
Prof. Dr. Andreas Fuchs ist Professor für Entwicklungsökonomik, Direktor des Centre for Modern East Asian Studies (CeMEAS) und Leiter des Ibero-Amerika Instituts für Wirtschaftsforschung an der Universität Göttingen. Er ist außerdem Forscher am Kiel Institut für Weltwirtschaft und leitet die Kiel Institute China Initiative. Seine Forschung untersucht Handels-, Investitions- und Entwicklungspolitik mit quantitativen Methoden und einen besonderen Fokus auf China und andere aufstrebende Schwellenländer. Prof. Fuchs analysiert auch die politische Ökonomie von Naturkatastrophen, humanitären Krisen und nicht-militarisierten Konflikten.

Vor seinem Ruf an die Universität Göttingen war er Professor an der Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg und am Kieler Institut für Weltwirtschaft (2018-2019), Akademischer Mitarbeiter an der Universität Heidelberg (2013-2018) und Postdoc an der Princeton University (2012-2013). Er hat seinen Doktortitel an der Universität Göttingen im August 2012 bei Prof. Dr. Axel Dreher, Prof. Stephan Klasen, Ph.D. und Prof. Dr. Stefanie Walter verteidigt. Prof. Fuchs hat Masterabschlüsse der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt und der Université Paris-Dauphine erworben. Außerdem hat er als Berater für die Bertelsmann-Stiftung, die Europäische Kommission und die OECD gearbeitet.
